D.O ARABA

D.O. Arabako Txakolina groups together the producers of txakoli in the province of Araba who make their txakolis under the parameters established by the managing body of the appellation of origin.

The first written testimonies found show that as early as the 9th century the production of txakoli in Álava was a common and widespread practice among farmers in the Ayala Valley, particularly in Amurrio, Llodio and Ayala.

In the cartulary of Valpuesta a reference appears in the year 864 of vineyards in Retes de Tudela (Artziniega) under the reign of the Asturian king Ordoño I, also in the cartular of San Millán de la Cogolla, there are written references that in the year 964 Vines were cultivated in the Land of Ayala for the production of wine, and specifically there is dated a donation of vineyards to the disappeared monastery of San Víctor in the Gardea neighborhood in Llodio.

In the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the txakoli vineyard plantation extended throughout the entire geography of the Ayala region under the protection of strongly protectionist ordinances, which prevented the entry of wine from outside until their own had been consumed.

Thus we can find in the Arespalditza archive what is the first appearance of the word chacolín in municipal archives of the Basque Country on November 1, 1623.
